We are Both Jars of Clay and New Creations

Gina Hurry

Lent Day 32, Thursday, April 10

For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us . . . Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 4:5-7, 5:17

Miracles and mystery fill these few verses. The miracle is we have the light of the glory of God in Jesus Christ glowing from inside our broken lives out to the broken world. We are transformed (metamorphed). We are new. The mystery is we are new creatures in a still-dark, still-broken world, in a still-broken body. But that's how the world gets to see his light. Radiate his light as a new (but still broken) creature. That light will reflect his power and glory.

Ponder: Do you believe that you are both a broken vessel and a new creation and that Jesus’ light will shine out of you?  How does it feel to just be a servant of the light, to not get any recognition of the power?

Praise: Light shines in the darkness and in our hearts through Jesus Christ.
